Windows users .. MSI vs. NSIS installer?

I’m working on getting Windows installers “signed” to eliminate the Windows Defender warnings.

In the process, I’m wondering about the installer itself. Is there any benefit to switching from the current NSIS installer to an MSI installer? What are the pros / cons for Windows users?

Any thoughts?

I know almost nothing about the technical details I’m afraid, but the one thing I can tell you from my time as IT admin in my group is that to distribute software via the Microsoft SCCM we had to have an MSI installer for it.

Whether this is a requirement of SCCM or a policy at the uni I don’t know, but in several cases we resorted to using a freeware program to make one, including for Avogadro in order to provide it on the group’s PCs.

To be honest, I don’t think I have encountered any issues with either installer in my many years of using windows. There don’t seem to be (from the user end) and obvious downsides to the current system, but then again, maybe I just have never encountered it.
