SoC for Kalzium and 3D

Moin all three of you

In CC is Avogadros list so that we can use a thread on avogadro-devel to
discuss further questions.

I think it is most fair if all three of you know the same facts. You all wrote
me that you’d like to apply for a SoC for Kalzium@3D. I already meet Marcus
in IRC and he send me an application. As far as I know my “job” is to rank
your applications and tell that ranking to some other KDE-guy who’ll tell the
total ranking for KDE to Google. At least I hope I got that right…

Benoit and Donald are currently working on improving libavogadro which is
supposed to be the “foundation layer” of Kalzium in KDE4. libavogadro is
using OpenBabel which you probably know. We all are trying to create a much
improved OpenBabel 2.1 (due very soon, Avogadro and Kalzium already depend on
the beta version of 2.1).

So whatever you do, Avogadro and Eigen and OpenGL are what you need to use. So
see what is currently possible check my blog:

An application to Google may only have 7500 chars, which is not exactly a lot.
You can use external links to put up more detailed information or mockups,
for example.
It is a good idea to check out KDE4 and kdeedu, cmake, avogadro and OpenBabel
2.1-svn already and familiarise yourself a bit with all that.

Madhusudancs also did send an application as attachment to his mail, IIRC.

I’m not 100% sure Toni is subscribed to this list to I CC him; Toni, if
you didn’t get Carsten’s mail, let us know.

Cheers,
Benoit

Thanks! I already resend the mail to Toni to be 100% he also got the mail.

I should also point out that while I won’t be very active this summer
and won’t be a sponsor (thanks Carsten!), I’d be more than happy to
provide suggestions/feedback in the applications. Since I’m getting
the Open Babel 2.1 release out the door, I haven’t been doing much
with Avogadro.

On the other hand, I do have a vast library of sample chemistry code,
links, etc., and I edited and rewrote large parts of the KDE SoC
topic. I’ll also be fleshing out some of the non-rendering plugin
design on the Avogadro wiki soon.[1]

And I don’t know if writing ability is judged by Google, but it never
hurts. Please feel free to e-mail me if you’d like me to take a look.

Cheers, (and Welcome!)
-Geoff

Dear Colleagues:

I have been working a bit on the KParts extension of Kalzium and now that
KDE4-konqueror is more stable I have been able to provide support for html
embedded chime files. I would like to send the patches for kalzium. For the
sake of consistency I would remove the whole compounviewer directory and
replace by a kalziumglpart directory and I think the natural way should be to
replace the actual kalzium visor for a KPart container one.
These patches are based on mime type recognition with chemical-mime-data which
I think should be included as a dependece for the Kalzium Part.
Waiting for your comments.

Why don’t you send the patches for a review?

In theory I am very much for this but let us have a look at the code first.
