Simon's Tool Idea

Perhaps Simon can post a bit more about this, but he was discussing
the tools yesterday on IRC and posted, what I think is a cool idea:

IMHO, there are a lot of advantages about this. We could include a
"title line" at the top that says “Draw Tool” or “Navigate Tool” –
since some of the icons aren’t always clear (especially to i18n).

We could also add a button in the tab to link to help text/tutorials.
Right now, not everyone sees the tool tips, so it would be nice to
have a real user guide.

Thoughts? Simon, could you elaborate a bit more?

I really like it and think it would go great with tabbing the engine list with
engine configurations. What I would love to see is this all on one side as we
discussed the other day with a layout similar to this for the tools at the
top and then the engines at the bottom with their config on the second tab.

I think that would make for a very nice default layout.

I realized last week, when I posted about Simon’s tool idea, he wasn’t
on the mailing list:

In particular, can anyone find a Qt application that has tool “tabs”
set up this way? Simon was borrowing an idea from GIMP, but I don’t
know how we’d do this in Qt. Can anyone find a Qt/KDE app with nice
tools?

Can’t we just have each tool generate a tab rather than generating a
button? I think it seems fairly easy to do. It’s just a matter of
making a tabwidget. Right now it’s generating pages for a stack widget
so the code can’t be that far off. If you really think this is good
stuff i’d be happy to do it quick. It definatly wouldn’t take that much
work.
