Hi everyone,
GNOME’s Open Desktop Ratings Service is used to collect user reviews in a cross-platform way. Avogadro currently only has 8 reviews on their, most are outdated, and they are sadly all negative (they can be read here). This results in an average rating of 1.8/5*. ![]()
(Note that the ratings and reviews are not separate for the Flatpak and the distro packages.)
The rating is shown to users of Linux app stores such as GNOME Software and KDE’s Discover (though not currently on the Flathub website). Part of our target userbase are students, who are more likely to use GUI app stores than the command line, and they are likely to be put off by a poor rating, which is a real shame.
The common theme of the reviews is of crashes and show-stopping bugs. It’s undeniable that Avogadro has a bunch of bugs, and does crash sometimes, but the situation has improved a lot over the past few versions thanks to the hard work of @ghutchis.
So I don’t at all want to claim that any of the set of reviews/ratings are unfair or false, but the fact remains that not a single review is for the current 1.100 release, and most of the reviews are for very old versions (50% for <1.97, 25% for 1.97–1.98, only 25% for 1.99). As such, I really don’t feel that they are a fair reflection of the current state of Avogadro, making them 1) not very useful for people browsing and 2) unnecessarily damaging to Avogadro’s reputation.
A bit of a plea then: If you are reading this and you are a user of Avogadro on Linux, and you’re on KDE or GNOME or another DE that uses the ODRS data, we would really appreciate it if you would leave a rating and/or short review in your app store!
I want to stress that I’m not asking to artificially improve our rating – I just want to make sure the rating is more representative of real user’s views right now. So don’t feel obliged to leave a 5-star review, we’d just like one that reflects your real opinion of the current state of Avogadro 2!
