MacOSX and Avogadro 1.0

Dear all

I, too, have problems with Avogadro 1.0 on non-current versions of OS X, as reported by others in this thread.
10.6.2: Everything is fine.

10.5.8: Program runs but the titles in the menu bar are all preceded by “&”.

10.4.11: Program crashes on startup, before bringing up any window. The system log says:

dyld: Symbol not found: _kTISPropertyUnicodeKeyLayoutData
Referenced from: /Applications/Avogadro.app/Contents/MacOS/…/Frameworks/QtGui.framework/Versions/4/QtGui
Expected in: /System/Library/Frameworks/Carbon.framework/Versions/A/Carbon

Feb 2 16:36:59 merlot crashdump[1183]: crash report written to: /Users/eddie/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/Avogadro.crash.log

This is the corresponding Avogadro.crash.log:

Host Name: merlot
Date/Time: 2010-02-02 16:36:59.329 +0000
OS Version: 10.4.11 (Build 8S2167)
Report Version: 4

Command: Avogadro
Path: /Applications/Avogadro.app/Contents/MacOS/Avogadro
Parent: WindowServer [339]

Version: (1.0.0)

PID: 1182
Thread: Unknown

Link (dyld) error:

Symbol not found: _kTISPropertyUnicodeKeyLayoutData
Referenced from: /Applications/Avogadro.app/Contents/MacOS/…/Frameworks/QtGui.framework/Versions/4/QtGui
Expected in: /System/Library/Frameworks/Carbon.framework/Versions/A/Carbon

My guess is that the binary contains some dependencies on system libraries that differ between OS versions. Would it be possible to provide an OS-independent binary? Of course I could go out and compile the whole thing myself, but ready-made binaries are so convenient

Cheers
Hans

Betreff: [Avogadro-Discuss] tutorial

Hi everybody,

I just downloaded version 1.0.0 of Avogardro for Mac OS X and wanted

to learn how to use the program, using the online tutorial on

http://avogadro.openmolecules.net/wiki/Tutorials:Getting_started

There it says on the first line:

“When you initially open Avogadro you will be presented with a screen such
as the one shown below”

However, the screen shown there looks very different from that

which I get when I open Avogadro on my Mac (OS 10.5.8), I cannot

see many of the Menus that appear in the Tutorial (I can see the

top line of Menus, except these are all preceded by an "&).

Is that because the Mac version differs from the one that is shown

in the tutorial? How can I learn how to use Avogadro on the Mac?

(I tried building norbornadiene, but I could not achieve that for

my life, I really seem to be lacking some crucial information).

Thomas

Dear Thomas,

I cannot help with your problem, but only sympathise, as I too have not been
able get Avogadro 1.0 to work on my MacOSX system. Other MacOSX users have
told me they experience similar difficulties.

I have no problem using Avogadro 1.0 with Microsoft Windows though, and
found its great for editing molecular structures.

Perhaps other contributors of the mailing list could suggest a solution…

Thomas: What is your default language on your Mac? I mean, under System Preferences > Languages (or International, depending on your version of OS X).

I cannot help with your problem, but only sympathise, as I too have not been able get Avogadro 1.0 to work on my MacOSX system. Other MacOSX users have told me they experience similar difficulties.

Susan: Can you be a bit more specific? What version of OS X are you using? What specific problems have you had?

I use Avogadro on my Mac every day (and I built the releases). Obviously, I’m not having problems. But I’d like to know what difficulties are happening, so I can ensure they’re fixed for 1.0.1.

Thanks,
-Geoff

Hi all,

seems that the thread regarding OSX has gone silent, but I have the
same problem as Susan on OSX (10.4) - can click on the Avogadro
executable, but nothing happens.

Some poking around reveals:

blum:/Volumes/Avogadro 1.0.0/Avogadro.app/Contents/MacOS> ./Avogadro
dyld: Symbol not found: _kTISPropertyUnicodeKeyLayoutData
Referenced from: /Volumes/Avogadro 1.0.0/Avogadro.app/Contents/
MacOS/./…/Frameworks/QtGui.framework/Versions/4/QtGui
Expected in: /System/Library/Frameworks/Carbon.framework/Versions/
A/Carbon

Trace/BPT trap

Now, ./Avogadro from the downloaded and mounted Avogadro .dmg is no
way to start an application in any case, but it is interesting that
there is a specific missing symbol here, which appears to be expected
but not present on my system.

Any ideas?

thanks & best wishes

I apologize that the discussion about Mac went silent – I’ve been buried with work.

Unfortunately, the Mac 1.0.0 binary was built with a slight mistake, and so it does not work on OS 10.4.x. My mistake. This should be fixed in the latest nightly builds.

In fact, for anyone having Mac problems, I’d like you to try a recent build and let me know if they work for you. I’d like to get things cleaned up for an upcoming 1.0.1 release.

Hi Geoff,

thanks - the latest nightly build (Feb-05) seems to work flawlessly
on OSX 10.4.11 …

all the best

Dear Geoff

Thanks very much for the action. I just tested the 7-Feb-2010 nightly build on 10.5.8, and it works fine.

Cheers
