I asked last April, but I’m curious again if there’s interest in an Avogadro + xtb “bundle” for macOS and Windows.
In particular, I think there should be two releases:
- the official macOS and Windows releases (no
xtb included) = current releases
- additional macOS and Windows packages that include @matterhorn103 avo_xtb plugin including
xtb and pixi and python, etc.
I’ve been testing a macOS bundle with some students here and it seems to be working well.. although it’s also ~270MB vs. the official release ~85MB (i.e., almost 3x larger)
With that big a difference in size, I would agree that separate releases makes sense, even if it’d have been nice to keep it simple.
I don’t think that 270 MB will bother many people though, so I think it’d be fair to push that as the main version if you wanted to, with the other one being like a “light” installation.
Yes, please. I’d like to use Avogadro with the xtb plugin in teaching, and the only way my local IT support will allow this is if there’s a nice simple bundle (for Windows, if that detail matters).

Definitely. The next step is to put in a Windows build. Since the xtb plugin also bundles Python, I’m thinking a bit about how to use that for the input generator scripts.
But I’ll try to have a test build by the end of the week.
