I believe this to be a bug with Avogadro:
I wouldn’t say “bug,” maybe a mix-up of files and labels??? When I download Avogadro2-2.0.0-win64.exe from https://avogadro.cc/install/index.html then install it, or install it from the MS store, either way v1.102.1 is installed. When I launch it it asks if I want to update to v2 - I click ~Ok (and click ~no for getting Python, which I believe is embedded in v2) then it tries to download the same file - Avogadro2-2.0.0-win64.exe. What file must I download to get v2?

Expected Behavior
I’d think v2 would be installed from Avogadro2-2.0.0-win64.exe grabbed from under the heading “Current Release (2.0.0).”
Actual Behavior
v1.102.1 is installed instead, then it asks if I’d like to update to the newer version but then downloads the same installer that is labeled for v2 but installs v1.102.1 .
Steps to Reproduce
Go to https://avogadro.cc/install/index.html , click “Download Installer” at the intersection of Windows and Current Release (2.0.0), Avogadro2-2.0.0-win64.exe will download, launch it and install Avogadro, launch Avogadro, it will ask to update and if you want ~Python, choose to update and but dismiss the ~Python button, then it will try to download the same Avogadro2-2.0.0-win64.exe .

I’m not entirely sure why it’s telling you to update if you’ve properly installed 2.0.0 from the installer. Maybe the version from the MS Store is still installed? Can you remove it entirely before re-installing?
The MS Store installer for 2.0 is held up in review. Evidently I need to be clear that some features require Python, which can be installed.
Yup, it was me being dense - I had forgot to turn Controlled Folder Access (CFA) off. Turned it off, downloaded Avogadro2-2.0.0-win64 from the ribbon below “Most users will want to use the official current release:” at https://avogadro.cc/install/index.html (I had downloaded it from the grid below that before), installed, and the Help/About menu now says it is 2.0.0. Sorry about that. Interesting though that with CFA turned on the same installer installed an older version (assuming the installer of the same name in the grid is the same file as what I most recently downloaded). I had not tested the older version to see if it worked but the GUI looked complete.
You don’t by any chance know if turning CFA back on will interfere with Avogadro or, perhaps down the road, interfere with it’s use with ORCA?
I’ll learn Avogadro basics for a few days then unless I hear definitively from someone here that CFA does interfere with Avogadro and/or ORCA I will turn it back on.

Avogadro doesn’t write to its own program folder (outside of install / update). On Linux that’s generally impossible. If you see the Input ⇒ ORCA… menu item, then Python has been installed and it’s able to run the input generators.
I don’t know what folders you’ve blocked, but as long as you’re writing files to directories okay’ed by CFA or you authorize Avogadro (e.g., Documents) it’s fine.
For sure ask if you have more questions / issues.
