Feedback Please!

Hey Everyone,

Shahzad, Ross and myself developed the Bond-Centric Manipulation tool as
part of our honours project at university this year. Its coming time to
write the report and we’d really appreciate some honest feedback on the tool
to include in the report. Carsten - we’d really love your opinion as a
chemistry teacher especially, you’re essentially our target audience and it
would be awesome to be able to include some user feedback in the report! If
any of you could help we’d really appreciate it!

On a side note, we’ll be demonstrating our tool (and inherently Avogadro
itself) on the 15th of October at ‘Engineering Day’ as part of the
requirements of our honours paper. We’ll be sure to pass on any feedback
and impressions we get back to you guys, I’m sure Avogadro will fair well
amongst the engineers and I’m hoping there’ll be a few chemists/chemistry
lecturers there to give us some feedback too!

Many thanks,
Shahzad, Ross, James

The report is due on the 24th of October so we have quite a while. But we’d
prefer to not leave it to the last minute, so anytime within the next two
weeks would be fine.

Thanks again!

Until when do you need a feedback? I would write it in detail but that
takes time as I have a very important test next monday.

I just remembered this now. Where is the form again? Or do you just
need general comments on the bond centric and auto-optimization tools?

Thanks,
-Geoff

Just general feedback on the Bond-Centric tool please :). Not sure about
the auto-opt tool, that’s Ross’ individual project… it may help him with
his individual report, not sure.

Just tell us what you think about the tool, what you like/don’t like, etc
etc.

Much appreciated

Man, I apologize completely for not writing something. I believe that
Geoff will be able to give you a more ‘customer’ like response but I
will try to do a quick feedback on your general impact on the Avogadro
project.

I would first like to say a very big thanks to all the work you three
have done and the inspiration you’ve brought to the project. I’m
defiantly not alone here. You guys have worked hard over the past
semester and have brought Avogadro an amazing (and pretty) tool.
Unfortunately some people may judge the tool solely on how it looks but
even down to the code it demonstrates very fine work. Also, the entire
time you have been open to all the feedback that everyone has given you
and even when I had some minor nitpick things about code and design
choices you guys were very open to them and did them. You also
demonstrated that you have a very good design habit. I am not sure on
what you were doing on your own or how you planned out the work, but
from my point of view it seems like you sat down and talked through the
design, modeled it (or at least sketched the idea) and then executed it.
For a project like Avogadro (and all open-source for that matter) many
times the software engineering process gets thrown to the curb but it
did not appear to me that you neglected it. I would presume that some
of this was due to the requirements of the class but regardless, you
appear to have done a wonderful job. On top of that, just from what we
have seen lately each one of you has enough initiative to start new
things and develop new ideas. The auto-optimize and wii-mote
modifications for sure. I’m not sure what work (coding and such) that
you have done before but I will say managing Avogadro is my first time
managing (if that’s what you’d call what i do) an open-source project
and so I must say I have learned as much from you three as you have
learned from me (i hope you learned something from me). Anyways, it’s
been a pleasure working with you guys and I hope you can still find time
to continue contributing as you inspire me to do more work just knowing
that there are other people chipping away at the same things I am. Of
course as of late I’m very busy with my own schooling; comprehensive
exam very very soon. I think the bond tool is great and was blown away
when I saw it. The ability to expand bond lengths dynamically (and
intuitively) as well as rotating around a specific angle is a great
ability and probably one that even commercial tools don’t have. On top
of it all the visualizations of your tool are very informative and in
doing them you have expanded the global Avogadro painter class which is
something we desperately needed. Your tool was motivation we needed to
make Avogadro all it will be. Thanks for everything.
