I am having trouble opening certain .xyz files that open correctly in
other programs. I don’t see anything in the file that should cause
this. One of the files is attached.

It’s not so much that you can’t open it – I can open it fine. When opening xyz files, Avogadro (or actually Open Babel) works out the bond orders and aromaticity of the system. This is time-consuming on fullerenes or similar large fused ring systems.
You can escape this by using the “Import → From Molecule File” command and unchecking the “Perceive Bond Orders” checkbox.
