This sounds like there is a problem with the version of Open Babel which is installed. I’d make sure that any data files are installed for the Open Babel package.
Beyond that, I’m afraid I can’t help much – that sounds like a problem with the SuSE packages, since it doesn’t happen on any of our standard testing platforms.
