Windows bug with generic .out or .log files

Many people have reported issues reading .out or .log files on Windows. I’ve tried to eliminate a few obvious bugs, and it’s still not working.

I think this latest build should fix the problem (and if not, give a very detailed error message):

If you’ve had problems with reading .out or .log files on Windows, please give this a try and let us know if it solves your problems.

Thank you for providing the update. I tested this build on Windows using Gaussian 16 .out files.

While the previous file loading error no longer occurred, covalent bonds were not rendered, as shown in the attached screenshot. On the other hand, .fchk files continue to load properly as before.

Please check the attached screenshot for details.

exam.out (21.4 KB)

It looks like the water was parsed as if the coordinates were in Bohr instead of Angstrom. That would generally indicate that it picked a different file format again (i.e., not Gaussian)

Can you please try renaming the file to something like exam.g16 to see if it’s a problem with the format guessing code?

Thank you for the reply.

Renaming the file to exam.g16 solved the issue, and it is now displaying correctly.

Thanks again for your help.

Well, it kinda solves the issue. I’m still wondering why it didn’t detect as a Gaussian file before, so I’ll continue to investigate.

But yes, it’s a useful workaround for now.
