Summary: Threaded GL currently very crash-prone

Initial Comment:
The current threaded-gl rendering is now extremely crash prone. I think there are several race conditions.

If I compile the Mac version with no threading, it’s pretty solid.

If I compile with threaded GL, I’ll get periodic crashes before launching.
(This didn’t happen a week ago.)

I also now sometimes get crashes when I enable new engines, etc.
