Teaching and Walk-Throughs

As the Avogadro 1.1 release nears, I’m taking some time to update the website. I’m curious if you’ve used Avogadro in teaching and have materials that you’re willing to share. (I have some new lessons which will be posted.)

Similarly, I’m working on walk-through tutorials for some of the new features, and was curious if there’s interest in other types of walk-throughs.

Please post your thoughts,
-Geoff

I am teaching a couple of undergraduates to do anharmonic IR spectrum simulations using CFOUR and
GAMESS. Currently they are using Avogadro to look at .xyz and molden files from CFOUR and to help create
inputs for GAMESS, and look at some of its output. So far molecules have been no more than about 15
atoms.

I have a GAMESS/Avogadro/MacMolPlt tutorial at

See also this tutorial,

Dear Geoffrey,

as you know
Michael Gadroy and me have developped
the “WiiChem” application which integrates 3D capabilities of
the Wiimote device (nintendo) in Avogadro in order to
propose a more immersive way to create and manipulate molecular models
for students and pupils.

The project is temporarily stopped because Michael has found a job,
but a free stable version can be download at :

http://www.univ-reims.fr/Wiichem

This version is currently employed at secondary school in few schools
in my region. Even at this “low level”, this extension of Avogadro
is appreciated by both teachers and pupils to teach and learn in 3D
small molecules.

Sincerely.
Eric

This may not be relevant, but thanks to Marcus’ efforts, we’ve had
Andrew Miller, who is chairman of the UK Science and Technology Select
Committee driving Avogadro with a Kinect.

There is a brief description and some videos here:

Best wishes,
