Stability of Avogadro 2

Hi All,
I am running Windows Vista on a Toshiba laptop (2 GB RAM, 1.46 GHz
processor speed). Although I have no trouble running Avogadro 1 on my
machine, and I do so often, Avogadro 2 always crashes before I have a
chance to draw any atoms. Do you know of any issues with anti-virus
software (Avast!) or with Avogadro 1 & 2 unable to co-exist on the same PC
of this vintage (purchased in 2007)?
Thanks,
Steve

I wonder if this might be an OpenGL issue, someone else reported an
issue. Avogadro 2 requires OpenGL 2.1, it is possible that the
detection code is not working as expected and crashing rather than
reporting the issue correctly. Do you know what graphics card/driver
your machine uses?

I will take a look, one problem I have is that I don’t have good
access to a machine without OpenGL 2.1 support. I have tested this on
a Windows 7 machine (real) with an Intel embedded GPU, several VMs
running Windows XP and Vista. I will see if I can set up a better test
case to ensure we fail gracefully under those conditions.

Thanks,

Marcus

Hi Marcus,
Thanks for your reply to my question. The graphics accelerator is from the
Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset Family.
Can I download OpenGL 2.1 from SourceForge, and if I do, can I simply
install it so that Avogadro 2 can use it?
Thanks,
Steve

Hi Steven

I think I tracked down the issue with at least correctly recognizing
and notifying you that the OpenGL requirements could not be met. There
should be a new nightly ready, I will tag and release 0.7.1 in the
next few days (with a fix for at least one other issue we uncovered
today).

In terms of drivers, looking around it seems that downloading the
driver directly from Intel is likely to give the best OpenGL support,
once we have a new binary I will make it available. Thank you for your
feedback, hopefully we can get this working (or at least fail
gracefully).

Sincerely,

Marcus
