Next Release

Marcus suggested that we make a new (0.8) release on Friday.

I’d like to slightly revise that. I think we should freeze the code
and make a release branch for 0.8. I think we should then take a few
days (e.g. until Monday, May 19th or Tues., May 20th) to get the Mac,
Windows, and other binaries ready, and have some good tutorials and
documentation.

I’d like to push out an announcement to a few (new) big mailing lists
and websites. So I’d like to make sure we have the wiki and tutorials
ready for some new users.

Sound good?

19 or 20 May sounds good. Who will do the windows build? I haven’t
build OB/avogadro on windows since the 0.6 release but all the
development tools are still installed if needed.

Actually, we probably want to create a category or two. For example:

Tutorial:Building
Tutorial:AutoOptimize
Tutorial:InsertingFragments

But I’ll see if I can help come up with a list of wiki/documentation
requests.

Do you need to do something extra to create a new category? I tried
adding links like Tutorials:*, but this doesn’t seem to create the
category.

Jordan and I were just brainstorming on irc for some basic tasks.
While there need to be basic tutorials, it would be good to have some
tutorials on tasks you might actually want to do  And do we make
references to user documentation for a per tool/extension/engine
overview?

cheers,

I am more than fine with that, but please don’t forget translation
We could even mention “translated into more than X languages” as some
kine of milestone…

On which beta of OpenBabel 2.2 do we depend? I think we should mention
that information in the announcement.

About “big lists”: I will announce it on kde-announce at kde.org and
blog about it.

To create a category, you need to put the following of every page that
should belong to that category:

[[Category:Tutorials]]

This will add it to the page:

http://avogadro.openmolecules.net/wiki/Category:Tutorials

I think it should be “Tutorial” singular yes? Doesn’t matter to me
really either way.

I may be able to push the code for unique IDs by that time and I’d
really like to see that happen to eliminate a lot of the undo/redo bugs,
or at least disable undo/redo for this release…

If you and/or Marcus can take care of that, it would be great.

However, my vote is not to disable undo/redo. For one, it’s a big
advantage of Avogadro over other programs. For another, we’re much
better in 0.8 than 0.6.x at undo/redo. So we should at least ship
something.

My policy with Open Babel is that eventually you need to ship 2.2 and
assume you’ll have bugs to fix for 2.2.x, but if you keep waiting for
something to be “perfect,” you’ll never release.

Just my $0.02,

2.2.0b5, which will be packaged tomorrow.

Geoff,

Can you wait til Friday to package this? I am working on the unique ID
stuff and I had to make GetAtom and GetBond const functions (which they
should be although this is a fine line since they return internal
pointers).
