Misc news

Hi folks,

this is a slow period for avo isn’t it? At least me, I’m focusing on math
right now and even when I do coding it’s in Eigen.

I wanted to say two little unrelated things…

  1. The KDE 4.1 hard feature freeze is scheduled for April 22.

  1. I just got hired as a postdoc at University of Toronto, from July 2008 to
July 2010. I hope we can eventually do a “avogadro devs meeting” as cryos
just suggested on IRC. At least that geographic proximity is motivating me
again for avo – though it will be monthes before I can find time to
    contribute directly to avo again.

Cheers,

Benoit

Well, not much has changed in the Avo codebase, although some concrete
bits are happening behind the scenes. Since we can’t release Avogadro
1.0 until Open Babel 2.2 is released, I’ve been pushing hard on that
front.

I think Marcus also has some plans for surfaces.

It’s good to get that on the calendar. I think we’re well on our way
for that. IMHO, we could set that as a target for an Avogadro-1.0
release.

Well, if we get Donald out to visit this summer, we can have at least
four of us together. That would be great.

Ah OK, that sounds great. Still in the “behind the scenes” category I’m
talking with Rivo Laks who is designing a kdesupport lib for opengl apps,
reusing part of our code (like the textrenderer and hopefully the sphere)
and eigen. I try to make it so that his lib will be usable by us – so
that we get rid of the maintainance of that code, and automatically
benefit from the improvements he is making (like text layouting in
textrenderer). The idea is that we would use his lib for what it provides,
and have our own opengl code for what his lib doesn’t provide. I’m making
sure his lib allows that, i.e. doesnt claim a monopoly on the QGLWidget.

Great!

Hm, I can’t guarantee anything because I don’t know how that summer will
look like from my side (moving, immigration for me, immigration for
irene…) but don’t hesitate to organize such a meeting when it’s
convenient for you three and I’ll see if I can join you.

Cheers,
