While there’s still a week left, I started the June report early.

If you’re curious to follow, the [GitHub page](https://github.com/OpenChemistry/avogadrolibs/pulse/monthly) shows the details I use to pull in these updates.

[New 1.96 Release:](https://discuss.avogadro.cc/t/avogadro-1-96-release/3845) Much of the progress from April and May were bundled into the new release. If you’re using older versions, please upgrade.

As a reminder, suggestions, bug reports, and the like are [always welcome!](https://github.com/OpenChemistry/avogadrolibs/issues) and we greatly appreciate help with [language translation](https://hosted.weblate.org/engage/avogadro/), coding, and Python plugin development.

If you’d like to try any of this, there are nightly builds for:

- [Linux AppImage](https://nightly.link/OpenChemistry/avogadrolibs/workflows/build_cmake/master/Avogadro2.AppImage)
- [macOS](https://nightly.link/OpenChemistry/avogadrolibs/workflows/build_cmake/master/macOS.dmg)
- [Windows 64-bit](https://nightly.link/OpenChemistry/avogadrolibs/workflows/build_cmake/master/Win64.exe)

**Recent Work**

Lots of bug and performance fixes!

- Translations now work! A bug blocking translations from [loading is now fixed](https://github.com/OpenChemistry/avogadroapp/pull/264) and this led to a pile of translation fixes.
  - There’s some initial code to [set the interface language](https://github.com/OpenChemistry/avogadroapp/pull/278)

 ![Screen Shot 2022-06-22 at 2.32.47 PM](https://discuss.avogadro.cc/uploads/default/original/2X/3/337689d909d5c04e344af663fcf1513b9a62b501.png)

- If you have some time - even only a little, you can contribute to our translations. Kudos to Ovari for a 100% complete Hungarian translation.

[![Translation status](https://hosted.weblate.org/widgets/avogadro/-/horizontal-auto.svg) ](https://hosted.weblate.org/engage/avogadro/)
- Aritz merged some initial code for [van der Waals surfaces](https://github.com/OpenChemistry/avogadrolibs/pull/897), solvent-accessible surfaces, and [solvent-excluded surfaces](https://github.com/OpenChemistry/avogadrolibs/pull/972).

- I merged a framework for [partial charges](https://github.com/OpenChemistry/avogadrolibs/pull/970) and electrostatics, which will soon include support for Python scripts to assign charges or electrostatic potentials (e.g., ML-based methods, etc.) If you have suggestions, please mention some codes to integrate (e.g., beyond Open Babel).

- Aritz merged new non-covalent rendering for hydrogen bonds, halogen bonds, and chalcogen bonds, including [new config options](https://github.com/OpenChemistry/avogadrolibs/pull/969).

 ![Screen Shot 2022-06-22 at 2.35.53 PM](https://discuss.avogadro.cc/uploads/default/original/2X/0/0ee8d6bfda44c6e63e4940d9424b4f9029a63e87.jpeg)

- We fixed a bug on Linux with transparent windows.
- Avogadro will now use direct support for [CJSON in Open Babel](https://github.com/OpenChemistry/avogadrolibs/pull/937), which should improve reading vibrations, partial charges, conformers, etc.
- There’s a new tool for [inserting DNA/RNA](https://github.com/OpenChemistry/avogadrolibs/pull/909)

**Work In Progress**

- There’s a draft to [create a new template tool](https://github.com/OpenChemistry/avogadrolibs/pull/900) as discussed in [this thread](https://discuss.avogadro.cc/t/feedback-wanted-template-coordination-tool/3814/2).
- There’s a [contribution bringing back constraints during geometry optimization](https://github.com/OpenChemistry/avogadrolibs/pull/841) … I just need to finish the new optimization framework. But this should also enable interfaces to quantum programs (e.g., Gaussian) to supply the constraints to input files.
- There’s also [work to fix HTTPS issues on Windows](https://github.com/OpenChemistry/avogadrolibs/pull/769) - if you can help test, it would be greatly appreciated!

**Feedback Welcome**

Many people have provided feedback, particularly to the new 1.96 release. Please continue to post - this is a community, open source project and suggestions, complaints, critiques are very welcome. We try to squash 🐛 🪲 and tweak features ..

Thoughts? Questions? Ideas?

One other big update - @mhanwell just merged an update to VTK9. There will likely be some instability for a bit, but this should help us keep up with distributions.
