i18n

Hi List,

The french translation is almost complete (723 strings out of 734). However
some very apparent strings in the Avogadro interface are not i18n’ed:

  • in the menu bar: Build, Select, Settings (and perhaps Extensions but it’s
    the same in french)
  • various entries in these menus
  • in the engines docks at the bottom-left of the main window: the engines
names are not translated, neither are the Add,Duplicate,Remove buttons
  • in the DrawTool gui: “Generate from SMILES”

Another problem is that in the console output, in the i18n’d names of the
plugins, the accented characters are omitted. For instance, I see:

Found Extension: “Maille lmentaire” - “Greffon des paramtres de mailles
lmentaires”

whereas I should see:

Found Extension: “Maille élémentaire” - “Greffon des paramètres de mailles
élémentaires”

Then, there are also a few strings that I gave up translating because there
are ambiguous and I lack the chemistry backgroup to make a guess, and there
was no comment there to help me. For example: “Occupation Restricted Multiple
Active Space”. Is it the occupation, or is it the space that is restricted?
Adding comments there would help.

I also spotted a few typos:
-Valance
-Angstom with wrong accent over the A (tilda instead of bubble)
-Principle Axis (didn’t you mean Principal?)

Cheers,
Benoit

Replying to myself:

the reason why many strings were not i18n’d is that I didn’t know I had
to “make update-translations”. So this is now done, and I have re-completed
the french translation (786 strings out of 797). So now the french
translation of avogadro feels almost complete.

However:

  • the engine names in the list of engines at the bottom-left remain
    non-i18n’d.
  • the other issues I reported remain. Concerning the misrendering of strings
in the console, I would suggest not translating at all the strings that are
printed in the console. After all, the console is only for debugging output,
the end user likely never sees it, or if he is interested in it, he can deal
    with it being in english.

Cheers,

Benoît

This tells me that your console is not UTF-8 aware. Mine is, and I see
the correct French accents. I see this as a console/terminal bug
rather than an Avogadro issue.

This is great. When translators find typos, could you give some
indication of the class or file? I’m not finding these strings right
now, but I don’t know if they’re fixed or still hiding in the code
somewhere.

Thanks,

OK, so grep tells me that all the typos that I reported are in
avogadro/src/extensions/gamessinputdialog.ui, which explains why you didn’t
see them in the code.

About my console not being utf8-aware – that’s possible as I am running
avogadro as “kde4” user and I haven’t taken much time to configure this
user’s environment very well.

I don’t know why this would be the case. Please file a bug. Those
strings should be in the header, and I can see you’ve translated them.
So the question is why the translated strings don’t come through.
