Avogadro on Qt Software web site

Hello!

I am the web community manager at Qt Software and lately talked to Carsten
Niehaus about your project. I think it’s amazing and I have a proposal for
you to leverage the public awareness towards both the libs and the
application.

Currently we are working on an OpenSource Showcase on our website on
http://trolltech.com/qt-in-use#oss and I would love to add Avogadro to this.
The pages presenting KOffice and Amarok are basically done and should give
you an impression of how this will look like.

The idea behind it is to present OSS applications that are built on Qt to a
broader audience and provide them with additional promotion possibilities and
show Qt in all possible use cases. This is a win-win situation and I hope you
see the benefit.

I will link to your project’s home page (increases your google page rank) and
whatever resources you want me to publish.

Please, let me know what you think so we can move on.

Thumbs up for the good work you did.

Have a good day,
Alexandra

Hi,

I think I speak for everyone in the project in saying that we’d love
to participate. We’re quite flattered! If I understand correctly,
you’ll want some help from us in building pages similar to KOffice and
Amarok, as well as screen shots, video, etc.

One minor problem right now is that we’re madly working on finishing
our “1.0” release and haven’t shipped a 0.9 or other beta in several
months. So our development builds are considerably different from our
last public version.

So if it’s OK, it might take us a few weeks to put together a new
release (which we’ve planned) as well as updated screenshots and
screencasts.

Thanks so much,
-Geoff (and everyone with Avogadro)

This is good to hear. Flattering opensource developers is one of my
specialities.

Exactly. I have a questionnaire sitting on my harddisk that should help you
collecting content. I will send this to Geoff directly to spare the list
attachments.

Screenies are always easy, and you already have this video up on blip.tv that
I will happily use if I may. The more tricky part is the actual content. I
hope that my questionnaire (internally labelled “beta”) helps you with that.

I completely understand and this is of course no problem at all. If we manage
to sync our activites a bit, chances are that Avogadro will be covered in our
monthly newsletter - ideally short after a 1.0 release. I can’t promise this
though as I am not the one deciding but I’ll definetely try to get you in.

Thanks so much,

Thank you for your help!

We need more people like you working at big companies

I made that, but please let me make a new one as it had some scaling issues
that reduced the quality. I can certainly make a showcase style video - are
you referring to the one with the title screen at the start?

That sounds great, we will do everything we can to ensure that there is a
release in the near future featuring all the stuff shown off on your pages. I
would hate for people to get excited about Avogadro only to find they can’t
use any of the new features we showed off for another few weeks.

Thanks so much,

Thank you for your help!

We are all very pleased that Avogadro has been chosen for this. Not sure if
you saw my blog, but we are already using some of the new Qt 4.4 features such
as QtConcurrent and I am experimenting with widgets on a QGraphicsView with an
OpenGL background. Still trying to iron out some performance issues but I
think that these are great features we can add to our applications thanks to
the new and innovative features that Qt has added recently.

Thanks,

Marcus

Hello!

First: apologies for this screwed email (I suspect HTML formatting) - I have to use something silly to access my inbox atm…

I just wanted to let you know that I am totally fine with you taking your time for preparations, release included if you feel like that should happen first  Just let me know when you have finished your preparations, or I’ll check back with you next year.

Happy holidays and a good new year to all of you!

Alexandra
