ANN: Avogadro 1.0.2 rc1 source tarballs

Hi,

I am pleased to announce the availability of Avogadro 1.0.2 rc1
tarballs. They are intended to give distro developers a chance to
easily verify fixes for bugs closed. There are some patches cooking
that I intend to merge before the final 1.0.2 release (very soon now),
but I wanted to get this out there.

There is also a gzipped version if you prefer,

This addresses many of the issues with newer versions of SIP, and many
other bug reports I will attempt to enumerate before we make the final
1.0.2 tarballs.

I would appreciate feedback on any critical outstanding bugs. We will
be making binaries as normal for the final release, as well as for our
unstable 1.1 development in the near future. I have verified builds
with recent SIP, GCC and Qt on Linux and Mac. I will do the same on
Windows shortly.

Thanks,

Marcus

Are there currently patches in Gerrit which have been incorporated? There’s a huge pile of things to review, and I’d hate to duplicate effort.

What OpenBabel version is recommended for shipping with 1.0.2?
2.2.3 or 2.3.0?

Also, there are unresolved crashers in the tracker.

I’d recommend 2.3.0 because it’s the most stable, has a completely improved stereochemistry engine (e.g., Insert SMILES for Avogadro), etc.

Certainly, that’s what I’ve been using for the Mac builds.

All the patches that are incorporated are marked as merged. It is a
snapshot from the other day. I was going to go through and merge some
more, but I wanted to get an rc out.

For Konstantin, whilst we will close all of the crashers we can, we
may still release a 1.0.2 that is simply a significant improvement
over 1.0.1. I think we have already delayed longer than we should,
what is there is better than 1.0.1, and I am willing to make a 1.0.3
in a few months if there are significant fixes.

I know it has been a while since we released, but I don’t want to
allow this process to take months. I am with Geoff, and think it is
reasonable to use Open Babel 2.3.0 with the release. Most Linux
distros have already updated their packages, and that is what it will
end up being built against there.
